RCT Alumni Jharrel Jerome wins Emmy for his
performance in the Netflix mini-series ‘When They See Us’
Jharrel attended our very first audition prep seminar in 2010, and was a member of RCT for many of our early seasons, (Little Mermaid, Grease, Legally Blonde and Hairspray) both as a performer and later as a counselor and production assistant. He graduated Fiorello LaGuardia HS, and after a year at Ithaca College, he went on to land the role of Kevin in Barry Jenkins Oscar winning movie “Moonlight”. He garnered critical praise for his role of Kevin. He was soon cast in the Stephen King series "Mr Mercedes", which is now entering season 3. In the spring of 2018, He auditioned for the role of young Korey Wise in the Netflix miniseries "When They See Us", based on the Central Park jogger case. After his audition, the series' director, Ava DuVernay, asked him to read the lines for adult Korey Wise, and he was subsequently cast in both roles. After it premiered on Netflix this past May, the accolades for both the show and his performance were huge. His breakout role garnered praise from celebrities like Oprah, Cardi B, Wendell Pierce, Octavia Spencer, Lil Rel, Prince Royce and a host of others. For his His incredible work, He took home the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. He has made history as the first afro-dominican and the youngest man to take home the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor Emmy. Congratulations to Jharrel, and we are so happy for him,his mom and dad, Radoyka and Stanley and his sister Ciara on this phenomenal achievement.
